Lynchburg Cake and Candy Co.
May 27, 2008 |
After reviewing the Deen Bro’s Cookbook, I decided to contact all of the establishments featured to request sample products. I’m happy to report that I received an overwhelming response and will be reviewing many additional products, in the days to come.
Today, I am reviewing products from the Lynchburg Cake and Candy Co. Owner, Billy Thomas, was kind enough to send me several yummy products, to taste test. Thank you again, Mr. Thomas.
I received a whiskey cake, whiskey balls and whiskey praline pecans, which happen to be the biggest pecans I have ever had the pleasure to eat. All of these products are made with Jack Daniel’s Whiskey.
Now is probably the time for me to mention that I’m not all that fond of whiskey. But, I was pleasantly surprised when I tasted each product.
The whiskey cake comes in a nifty tin. It has a shelf life of six months, but I guarantee it probably won’t last that long. The recipe is the brainchild of Billy’s mom, Bunt, who is still going strong at age 95.
It reminds me of fruitcake, only better. It’s filled with raisins, apples and pecans. My whiskey cake, from Lynchburg Cake and Candy Co., is very moist and has a great texture. Because it’s so dense, even a small piece is satisfying.
My husband says it reminds him of old-fashioned, cinnamon-spiced, apple fritters. He’s not a big cake eater, but gives it five stars.
The whiskey balls are quite large and are much like bonbons or chocolate covered cherries, without the cherry. It’s another old recipe that was altered a bit, by Mrs. Thomas. The center’s are rich and creamy with a whiskey kick.
The Lynchburg Whiskey Praline Pecans are to die for! Keep in mind, when ordering these, one bag will not be enough. When I first saw this product, my intent was to save a few of these for my Mom, who loves pecans. If it wasn’t for my husband, who grabbed the bag out of my greedy little hand, this afternoon, Mom would never have the pleasure of tasting the best pecans, ever.
These gigantic nuts would be a wonderful addition to any recipe or as a dessert topping. They would be great on homemade bear claws or in ice cream. Whether you purchase the original or orange praline flavor, you won’t go wrong.
The Lynchburg Cake and Candy Co., also offers a line of gift baskets, suitable any gift giving occasion. Along with their own products, the Thomas’ have put together a delicious variety of ‘Made in Tennessee’ food products, such as Johnny Freeman’s Honey Mustard Salad Dressing and Sweetwater Buttermilk Cheese.
If you are familiar with Lynchburg Cake and Candy Co., I hope you will take the time to tell us what you think, of their tasty product line. Even if you don’t like Jack Daniel’s, you won’t regret trying Mrs Thomas’ recipes.
